Ferreting
Ferreting in Scotland is both a sport and an effective form of rabbit control.
There are many ways of managing rabbit populations but ferreting can be both effective and enjoyable.
Ferrets can be entered into rabbit burrows after all the obvious nearby holes have been covered by purse nets, and staked to the ground. When the rabbits attempt to escape they are held by the net until humanely dispatched.
Alternatively, the rabbits can be shot with a shotgun as they bolt from the holes.
It may sound simple but there is a lot of fieldcraft and understanding of ferret, and rabbit, behaviour involved.
The permission of the landowner is required before ferreting.
